Our History

Y Prentis was established in October 2012 by Melin Homes and Monmouthshire County Council for people across South East Wales. At the time there was an apparent need for more socially procured goods, services and works associated within the construction industry, particularly across the south-east region. Y Prentis was setup in response to this issue with the aim to create more opportunities to meet the increasing demand for more local job opportunities.

Since the company has been established, we have made a difference by helping to train more than 340 apprentices and securing more than £1.95 million in funding for training and employment.

The programme is managed on a day to day basis by the Y Prentis team, headed up by the Programme manager. In 2018 the scheme secured additional funding from Welsh Government to deliver an additional 30 apprenticeships across the Valleys Task force area. With the investment made into the scheme’s marketing and engagement resources, the scheme has put a focus on delivering regular and consistent engagement activities to raise awareness of our the scheme, strengthening our relationships and supporting the development of young people into the construction industry to ensure we have a sustainable pipeline of young talent for the future.

To remain relevant and to continue to make a difference, we must evolve and meet the challenges that lie ahead. Read more about how the scheme is governed here.
