Q&A with Luke Haines, Company Surveyor
YOU’VE BEEN PARTNERED UP WITH Y PRENTIS FOR 3 YEARS, SINCE 2020. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO GET INVOLVED WITH YPRENTIS INITIALLY?
“We heard of the project through Programme Manager Darryl Williams and thought it was brilliant. We knew if Darryl was involved it was sure to be good, and it has proven to be exactly that.”
WHY DO YOU ENCOURAGE OTHER CONTRACTORS TO HOST APPRENTICES THROUGH YPRENTIS?
“It allows businesses the chance to offer opportunities to those entering the construction industry, this can be daunting, but the support Y Prentis offers throughout is invaluable and makes for a positive experience. It can be somewhat of an unknown to many businesses, but having a scheme like this genuinely makes the whole process simple.”
WHY ARE APPRENTICESHIPS IMPORTANT TO YOU AND/OR TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY?
“Our Contracts Manager and several of our Site Supervisors all began as apprentices with us. We believe by creating a positive learning environment and given the time to develop their skills and knowledge of the industry, they can look to achieve the same in their careers and even more.”
“There is perhaps a stigma attached to working within the construction industry, this is extremely important to change. Especially with the decline of skilled trades people across the UK. This alone highlights the importance of schemes like Y Prentis, that look to change this and provide a clear route of entry into the construction industry.”
HOW HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE THUS FAR BEEN, WORKING WITH Y PRENTIS?
“Very positive, all the team at Y Prentis are fantastic, everyone we have dealt with. Always on hand to help with any issues or queries. Recently one of the apprentices completed their training and has stepped straight into a supervisory role with us, a real example of how Y Prentis works and long may that continue.”
